Some people have a habit of naming their boards. Some people just refer to them with a descriptive term. Well as my friends know, I call my 161 "the Ferrari" because that’s what it feels like compared to every other previous board I’ve had before, which I realized performed much like a Toyota Celica. I bought it from the rental shop I worked for at the time. We had a rack of demo boards (before the Australians left) and I rode a lot of them and had to adopt the Cardiac. The first time I rode it I took a pillow line down a cliff where there was no real runout zone so I had to take it slow. I remember as I was dropping off these successive marshmallows on my heelside edge how amazed I was at how good I could feel the tips of the board. This is a stiff board, and it really holds tight. Another time I was hauling out of control through super chunky spring crud and as I carved, the board felt like a speed boat popping in and out of the water but never losing the edge. In other words, this board had the edge to hold me in my carve when most others would have gotten blown out. The tail is slightly narrower than the nose which helps drawing out your turns into long, fat carves. I am always surprised that the Cardiac is considered a "freestyle" board because it has blown away every other board I’ve ridden in the steeps. I’m writing this review in 2001 for a 1998 board that I only take out to the backcountry, so its pretty easy to say that if something bad happened to it I’d probably buy another stiff Option.
