Background:
This is my first personal board I owned and have been riding it for 3 years. I wanted to review it on this site before but felt I have not had enough experience with other boards other than rentals (which usually are kinda crappy). Since then I have tried friends boards of various brands and characteristics so here is my long overdue review on a board which year’s model will be extremely difficult to obtain by now! :) But hopefully, this might help you make a decision on a more current model since they are generally similar from year to year.
Performance:
As the class suggests, this is a “hard carving freestyle” board. Its edge hold is superb and it carves really true at both high and medium speeds. The flex is rather stiff compared to most other boards I have tried, which is what makes it stable at high speed turns (though I do hear that Lib Techs are supposed to be rather flexible compared to other brands’ stiff models). However this stiffness also prevents you from carving at lower speeds since you need centrifugal force from your body weight to flex the board enough to completely hold the edge to establish the “ice-skate” trail. With well-maintained edges, ice is cake-walk. Although this is a directional board, switch riding is great and smooth carves can be held onto as well (although not as natural) in fakie. The base is ptex 9000 grade sintered which holds wax like a sponge. It is really tough and hard to damage. You can feel its hardness with your finger nails (or rather, you CANNOT feel it because it won’t depress like other bases). I never needed to repair this board even though I am considered an aggressive rider and east coast snow is not always “snow”. This base is the fastest I’ve ridden and I wouldn’t be surprised if the only faster bases are the new TNT or Teflon stuff from the same brand. With the above said, although this happened to be my first board I would not feel that this is the most suitable for many beginners. This is not the most forgiving board and the true features of this device are at high speeds. The increased acceleration also would make it tougher for the beginner to learn. With this board, bumps felt really well for the expert are needless for the beginner. But it all depends on the person. If a beginner is very confident of his/her abilities, this board will last for many stages of development and you won’t need another one for a while. At later stages of riding, this is a great all around board with superior performance in high speed turning.
