This is actually my first year participating in snowsports. Not wanting to spend a fortune on renting gear, I walked straigth to the next specialist shop, in search for a board a beginner and an advanced boarder could ride as well. And there it hit me like a miracle, standing right in front of me: 162cm of processed plywood, 25.2mm waist width, 8.3 meters of sidecut radius. In other words: A brand new Burton Clash. Taking a look on it's spec sheet, I immediately pulled out my purse, threw it in the direction of the sales manager and escaped to the slope (with the board under my arm, of course).
Bindings closed, we started our first journey down the hill, crashing straigth into a skiier after about 5 meters, at the same time certifying the board's name 'Clash'. As soon as I finished with removing the ski-poles from my ears, I began with the tough domestication of my rebellious new ride. On the third day, I already managed to do my first connected turns, and from that moment on, everything changed to the good.
The board, partly due to the length, goes really stable and really fast. It's flex seems to be somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, just right for my skill. Although "only" having a extruded base it holds wax quite well. We had a lot of stones here at season start, it's base survived them with not a lot more scratches than my friend's Palmer, Forum or more expensive Burton ones (so kinda hard base as well, however, not quite as hard as the sintered ones). Only thing of complaint: The edges tend to collect a thin sheet of rust quickly, but that seems to be a common problem and is easily prevented by always drying the edges after a day. Riding this board means mainly one thing: Fun, fun, and a lot of fun!
For me, the Clash, with it's sleek figure, the light-grey nose and green tail is simply the most beautiful piece of wood I've ever encountered. From the first boarding day on, I fell in love with it. If you ever visit Austria in a few years time and meet a freaky guy with a '02 Clash under his feet, you'll at least know that I'm still hooked on the Clash then. :o)
One of my friends always keeps telling that there are two "sacred" things for every snowboarder: His board, and his beanie. Well, I think I've at least found the first one...
